How to get there: There is free parking for all drivers. You can also take, NJ Transit from NY Penn Station to Perth Amboy.

What to wear: Dress for the forecast weather! Likely shorts and a light jacket, soft soled shoes, preferably with light colored soles (black soles may leave scuff marks).  Bring a hat, preferably one with a chin strap.

What should you bring? There will be bottled water on board, but pack a sandwich and any snacks, chips/pretzels for yourself and mark the bag with your name.  Bring soda or beer (or wine) for yourself in metal/plastic cans/containers. Any bags should have a zipper closer to keep contents from spilling out. Don’t forget sun screen & sunglasses!

What NOT to bring? Your favorite hat – it might blow off in the wind! Dark soled shoes, thong or high heeled shoes (also, no bare feet please). Your own cooler – ok to bring, but plan to leave it in your car/at the dock – there will be a cooler and ice for everyone’s things on board. Also, no glass containers. There are life jackets on board, so you do not have to bring one.

Jim will need some help operating the boat.  Let him know if you want to help or learn how to sail.  Otherwise you can just lay back and soak up the sun! Members and    Friends and Newcomers welcome!

FYI!!! Captain Jim likes Sourcream and Onion Potato Chips and Black Cherry Soda

September is the perfect time to visit Long Island's Vineyards.

Join the Swiss Ski Club for a day on wine tasting on Long Island’s North Fork.  We will be visiting one winery, Kontikosta Vineyards in Greenport NY, a family-owned winery on the east end of the North Fork. For more information on the winery see: https://www.kontokostawinery.com/

Register for the event in the link and we will send out carpool information shortly. This is a free event for the ski club, any charges are imposed by the vineyard, for food or beverages. The vineyard is going to expect visitors to purchase wine samplers, purchase food and perhaps purchase their products.   No Outside food is permitted. This is a 21+ event, and if you choose to wear a mask, that is left to your discretion.  Dress casually. Remember: Rain or Shine.  Please see their website for rules regarding pets, etc.

This is just one of the many wineries that dot the North Fork of Long Island.  Work with your carpool driver and plan your own side trips to neighboring wineries to round out your day.  Once you are out there, they are all a few minutes away.  There are also many farm stands where you can buy fresh fruits and vegetables. There is plenty of parking available.

About the Vineyard from their website:

The location provides a serene and picturesque backdrop, making it a popular spot for visitors who appreciate both fine wine and beautiful landscapes.

    History

    • Founders: The winery is family-owned, founded by brothers Michael and Constantine Kontokosta. They established it as one of the few waterfront wineries on the East Coast.
    • Sustainability: Kontokosta Winery is known for its commitment to sustainable farming practices. They focus on minimizing their environmental impact, making use of wind and solar energy, and practicing eco-friendly viticulture.

    Wines

    • Varietals: The winery produces a range of wines, including Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Chardonnay, Rosé, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. The wines are known for their quality and have won several awards.
    • Tasting Room: The tasting room is modern and minimalist, designed to complement the natural beauty of the surroundings. Visitors can taste wines while enjoying views of the vineyard and the Sound.

Kontokosta Winery is known for a variety of well-crafted wines, with some of their signature offerings being:

    1. Sauvignon Blanc

    • Characteristics: This wine is crisp, refreshing, and vibrant, with flavors of citrus, green apple, and sometimes tropical fruits like passion fruit. It's a popular choice for those who enjoy a bright, zesty white wine.
    • Pairing: Pairs well with seafood, salads, and light, fresh dishes.

    2. Viognier

    • Characteristics: Their Viognier is typically aromatic with notes of peach, apricot, and floral undertones. It’s a fuller-bodied white wine with a rich, smooth texture.
    • Pairing: Works beautifully with poultry, pork, and dishes featuring cream sauces or richer textures.

    3. Chardonnay

    • Characteristics: The Chardonnay at Kontokosta is often balanced between oaked and unoaked styles, offering notes of apple, pear, and sometimes subtle vanilla or butter depending on the vintage.
    • Pairing: Complements grilled chicken, pasta with cream sauces, and a variety of cheeses.

    4. Rosé

    • Characteristics: Their Rosé is usually a dry, light wine with bright acidity and flavors of strawberries, raspberries, and sometimes watermelon. It’s perfect for summer sipping.
    • Pairing: Pairs well with salads, seafood, or as a refreshing aperitif.

    5. Cabernet Franc

    • Characteristics: This red wine is medium-bodied with flavors of red berries, bell pepper, and a hint of spice. It’s one of the signature reds from Long Island vineyards, and Kontokosta’s version is often well-regarded.
    • Pairing: Ideal with roasted meats, grilled vegetables, and hearty stews.

    6. Merlot

    • Characteristics: Known for its smooth, round texture, Kontokosta’s Merlot typically features dark fruit flavors like plum and blackberry, with hints of chocolate or earthy undertones.
    • Pairing: Great with lamb, beef, and dishes with rich sauces.
